Statement on the Russian invasion of Ukraine

The Global Equality Caucus is deeply alarmed by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, in violation of international law and human rights standards. We condemn the violence that is happening across the country.

As a network that advocates for LGBT+ equality and equal treatment under the law, the principles of human rights and self-determination are core to our beliefs. The suffering inflicted on the Ukrainian people is unjustifiable and contravenes everything we stand for.

We are concerned that Russia’s subversion of Ukrainian democracy and sovereignty has put human rights defenders in the country at immediate risk. We call on governments worldwide to recognise the humanitarian impact of this invasion and to take necessary action to ensure any Ukrainian at risk of persecution can be guaranteed safety elsewhere.

We urge our members to raise these issues with their foreign ministers and in their parliaments and assemblies.
