Global Equality Caucus welcomes continued focus of the United Nations on LGBT+ issues

Members of the Global Equality Caucus welcomed the decision by the United Nations (UN) to keep working on LGBT+ issues for a further three years.

The mandate of the Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, Victor Madrigal, was renewed decisively in a vote at the UN’s Human Rights Council meeting in Geneva.

Since the mandate of the Independent Expert was created three years ago, investigations into the human rights of LGBT+ people have taken place in a number of counties, including Ukraine, Mozambique, Georgia and Argentina.

Nick Herbert MP, Chair of the Global Equality Caucus, said:

“I’m thrilled that the UN Human Rights Council has voted to continue the work of the Independent Expert on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. The Independent Expert is vital in tackling violence and discrimination on the grounds of sexual and gender identity in every region of the world. We know that LGBT+ rights are human rights and need to be protected and upheld everywhere.”
