GEC leads programme for legislators as EuroPride conference kicks off

The EuroPride LGBTI Human Rights Conference gets underway at The Phoenicia Hotel, Floriana.

EuroPride Valletta 2023 is already in full swing, with a two week programme of cultural and artistic events taking place across the Maltese islands.

Activists and politicians are arriving in Malta to attend the EuroPride LGBTI Human Rights Conference, which began today (Wednesday 13 September) and concludes on Friday 15 September.

The Global Equality Caucus has coordinated with the conference organisers to ensure a meaningful role for legislators attending EuroPride, with sessions focused on legislative advocacy as part of the main conference plenary, in addition to multiple side events outside of the conference agenda.

Key highlights of the programme include:

  • A conference plenary session organised by Parliamentarians for Global Action, featuring legislators from Africa sharing their experiences defending equality in difficult political landscapes

  • A conference plenary session organised by the European Parliament’s LGBTI Intergroup, examining how laws to advance the rights of rainbow families can be championed in Europe

  • A private roundtable organised by the Global Equality Caucus in partnership with the British High Commission Malta and the Office of the Maltese Parliamentary Secretary for Equality, bringing together legislators from Commonwealth countries to share experiences and agree common strategies to advance the human rights agenda in the Commonwealth

  • A community panel discussion organised by the Global Equality Caucus in partnership with For A Diverse Hungary, featuring legislators from Central & Eastern Europe to highlight examples of progress on inclusive legislation despite recent backlash against LGBT+ rights.

On Saturday 16 September, openly-LGBT+ legislators and allies from Europe, Africa and North America will convene at the Maltese Parliament for the Global Parliamentary Forum, a special debate in the chamber of the House of Representatives dedicated to the promotion of global LGBT+ rights. The debate will be streamed live on Malta’s Parliament.TV and will be followed by a reception hosted by the Global Equality Caucus, where we will present the 2023 update to our HIV Prevention Handbook.
