Advancing LGBT+ Rights in Brazil: GEC at the 4th National Conference on the Rights of LGBT+ People in Brasília

The Global Equality Caucus (GEC) had the pleasure of attending the 4th National Conference on the Rights of LGBTQIA+ People in Brasília, a landmark event for LGBT+ rights in Brazil.

Held under the theme “Building the National Policy on the Rights of LGBT+ People,” the conference marked a pivotal moment in the Federal Government’s renewed commitment to restoring social participation and democratic dialogue. Following years of setbacks, including the dissolution of previous councils and conferences, this gathering signalled a new era of inclusion and policy rebuilding.

With over 4,000 participants, including legislators, policymakers, and civil society leaders from across Brazil, the conference offered an unparalleled platform for collaboration. For GEC, it represented a unique opportunity to strengthen strategic partnerships, connecting lawmakers to promote health equity and to highlight the urgent need to sustain both domestic and international funding for HIV programming.

Throughout the event, GEC engaged with legislators such as MP Daiana Santos, MP Linda Brasil, and MP Guilherme Cortez, as well as council members Vereadora Regininha, Professora Rose de Carvalho, Jhonatan Soares, and Inés Paz, all of whom play vital roles in advancing equality and inclusion across Brazil.

Alongside the conference, GEC Executive Director Aron Le Fèvre participated in the International Dialogues in Brasília, a multilateral forum held on 20–21 October 2025 at the Rio Branco Institute. The forum convened representatives from Brazil and EU member states to exchange experiences, innovations, and challenges in developing and implementing inclusive and intersectional public policies that protect LGBT+ rights. The discussions identified shared priorities and practical strategies to reduce inequalities, strengthen institutional frameworks, and foster sustained cooperation between Brazil and the European Union.

The Global Equality Caucus continues to champion strategic partnerships, democratic participation, and international collaboration for the advancement of LGBT+ rights across Latin America and the Global South.
